    What is Low-density Polyethylene or LDPE?

    LDPE is simply a soft, lightweight, tough, and flexible in its form and belongs to the Polyethylene branch of thermoplastics. It is obtained from petroleum and is also famous for having low-temperature compatibility but good corrosion resistance. LDPE also possesses impact resistance and good chemical properties which makes it easy to transform. The melting point of LDPE is 110°C.

    Because of having more branches in its structure rather than being in perfect rows, It is often used in applications where structural strength and stiffness are important requirements, and that is why LDPE is low density/volume.

    LDPE is largely used in film applications - according to the American Chemistry Council (ACC), since it is tough, flexible, and relatively transparent, LDPE is also applied to produce some other flexible items such as bottle, lid or wire and cable applications.

    Properties Low-Density Polyethylene

    LDPE is noted for low-temperature flexibility, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Therefore, not suitable for products where stiffness, high-temperature resistance, and structural strength are required. LDPE is a soft plastic material. Below are its main attributes:

    1. Great resistance to alcohols, acids, and dilute alkalis;

    2. Fantastic electrical insulating properties;

    3. Meager water absorption;

    4. High impact strength at low temperature;

    5. Decent weatherability;

    6. Good processability as compared to price (inexpensive);

    7. Density: 0.910–0.940 g/cm3;

    8. Meager resistance to mineral oils, halogenated and aromatic hydrocarbons, and oxidizing agents;

    9. Normal temperature resistance – 80°C continuously and 95°C for shorter times.

    Application of Low-Density Polyethylene

    LDPE is considered to be almost unbreakable. It is used to make many thin, flexible products like plastic bags or packages for dry-cleaning, newspapers, bread, frozen foods, etc. Shrink-wrap or stretch film is also made out of LDPE, as well as coatings for paper milk cartons and disposable beverage cups. Many manufacturers use LDPE to create thin container lids, squeezable bottles, and toys.

    1. Packaging Applications: the advantage of LDPE material’s inexpensiveness and good flexibility, it is extensively used in plastic packaging. For example: lunch boxes, squeeze bottles, liners, trash bags, pharmaceutical packaging, laminations, food packaging films, etc.

    2. Consumer Goods: Agriculture films used for packaging and storing all sorts of agriculture products, flexible and lightweight toys, housewares, etc.

    3. Pipes & Fittings: Low water absorption and lightweight properties make it the go-to thermoplastic for applications involving water like water pipes, hoses, etc.

    4. Wires & Cables: Good electrical properties also make LDPE a perfect choice for manufacturing cable jacketing & coatings and sub-consumer insulators.

    The more rigid form of LDPE is easier to recycle and is provided for curbside collection by a growing number of councils.
